The project partners are not developing a care programme, but a scheme that may be used by other corporations and healthcare providers that will enable elderly people to live independently at home for longer. This is not a theoretical study but a practical test that actively involves users.

One of the key points is that all ICT tools must be easy to install and dismantle in existing homes. This is called Plug and Play. Users are able to choose which package they would like to use. There is also an option to add specific features to the package at a later stage. Internet provider KPN sees the potential in these services and would like to provide the ICT infrastructure via their own network.

Key features
• Essence of the project: Domotica applications and communication services enable people to live independently at home for longer. An ICT support tools package will be created based on the needs and perception of residents. For the carers, volunteers and healthcare providers, a straightforward communication approach with the residents must be established as well as a process to easily manage and provide different support tools via the Internet. Carers and volunteers are able to manage the digital platform together with the resident. Furthermore, it is possible to include professional healthcare providers so that information can be exchanged and, subsequently, care can be harmonised amongst the parties.
• The project aims to install domotica applications and communication support tools in 3,000 homes.
• Strength of this project: in order to keep costs to a minimum, the project is using the Internet. A provider such as KPN is able to provide clients with access to ICT services. This enables them to choose who they would like to contact for help rather than being tied to certain providers and their care and wellness services.
• Due to this project, the timing of care is now in the hands of clients and healthcare providers. Elderly are now less dependent and are able to safely live at home for longer. The extent of the need for digital services is different for everyone.

“Care, safety and comfort services as essential services” is a project backed by, for example, the following partners: Telezorg, TU Eindhoven, Tante Louise-Vivensis and Wonen West-Brabant. The municipalities of Bergen op Zoom, Roosendaal, Woensdrecht and Steenbergen are also involved in this project.
